2024 Bowling Championship Recap Day 1
SALEM, VIRGINIA – The top eight bowling teams took to the lanes for day one of the 2024 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Bowling Championship at Lee-Hi Lanes in Salem, Virginia. Day one of the 2024 CIAA Bowling Championship started with Individual play. The 2023-24 Bowler of the year, Paige Rockwell from Fayetteville State finished with the highest average of 197.25. Amaree Durfee from Virginia Union followed with an average of 193.50. Ericka Reed from Fayetteville State finished with an average of 183.50. TaVera Johnson from Bowie State finished with an average of 183.25. Rounding out the top five is Brooke Smith from Shaw with a 181.75 average.
Bracket Play
The opening round of the championship was met with a matchup between no. 1 Fayetteville State Broncos (FSU) versus. no. 8 Virginia State Trojans (VSU), no. 3. Virginia Union Panthers (VUU) versus no. 6 Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (JCSU), no. 4 Livingstone College Blue Bears (LC) versus no. 5 Elizabeth City State (ECSU), and no. 2 Bowie State Bulldogs (BSU) versus no. 7 Shaw Bears.
ROUND 1
FSU went 4-1 against VSU to advance to the second round, while the Blue Bears defeated ECSU after a seven-game battle for the winners bracket. The Panthers of Virginia Union University collected a 4-2 victory over the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith, and the Bulldogs of Bowie State won against Shaw, 4-1.
Moving on to the round 2 winners bracket were FSU, LC, VUU, and BSU while VSU, ECSU, JCSU, and SU battled it out in the losers bracket in hopes of bowling another round.
