NYC PLAYWRIGHT FILLS THEATRE AT FISK UNIVERSITY FOR STAGED READING OF HIS NEW PLAY, BROWN BOY MAD

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  – On Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 9 pm, Brown Boy Mad, a play by SékouWrites, enjoyed its world debut at Fisk University.
Despite the late hour and the inclement weather, Fisk’s iconic Little Theatre was packed full of theatergoers from as far away as Atlanta who were eager to see the staged reading of Sékou’s new play, which was presented by Professor Persephone Felder-Fentress and the Fisk Stagecrafters.
This was the world debut of Brown Boy Mad, which was written by award-winning blogger, journalist, author, and playwright SékouWrites, who is currently serving as an artist-in-residence at Fisk while he develops the play. It’s important to note that the play was introduced to the world on February 26, the same day that Trayvon Martin was killed in 2012– even more significant since Trayvon’s is mentioned in the play.
The staged reading utilized the talents of several Fisk students including Jeffrey Casey, Chelseai Cunningham, Kiaré Green, Meaghan Hall, Kyron McDonald, and Keenya Phillips Riley, among others. Kyna Kyles, the author of Some See in Color, I See in RHYME, graced the stage as the opening act.
The event was open to the public and free but donations were collected and Sekou surprised everyone by donating 100% of the proceeds to the Fisk Stagecrafters. Several of Sekou’s Morehouse brothers (Konson Patton, Dr. J. Sheats, Tony Lewis, and Korby Marks) also contributed to the production by donating their time, energy and resources.
Best described as a choreopoem, Brown Boy Mad incorporates elements of film, song, poetry and even the actual perspectives of the actors in an attempt to describe some of the author’s real-life interactions with race and microaggressions in “post-racial” America.
During a brief talkback after the performance, one attendee described the play as just the right mix of anger and humor. “These issues of race and microaggressions are, unfortunately, timeless,” said Sekou about Brown Boy Mad.
SekouWrites lives in New York City but frequently travels to Nashville to visit his mom and aunt who are both Fiskites. Sekou has written for a wide range of publications including Essence, Ebony, Uptown, and Upscale amongst others. He has also edited three books (When Butterflies Kiss, Stories of Survival & Beyond, and The Sound of Silk at Midnight), been featured in several anthologies, performed in the NYC Fringe Festival, and earned an MFA in Creative Writing from New School University. He has been featured as a guest on many podcasts, radio shows and TV shows including Nightline, The Today Show and WGBH’s Basic Black.
