At virtual boot camp, Jackson State University spokeswoman presents case study on real active-shooter situation

(JACKSON, Miss.) — Maxine Greenleaf, executive director for JSU’s Department of Communications and Marketing, recently shared at a virtual boot camp with other higher-education professionals her institution’s measured response after an active-shooter event led to a brief shutdown of the HBCU campus late last year.

Jackson State University’s Greenleaf was one of nine speakers at the Virtual Education Communicators Boot Camp. Her presentation was titled “Executing a Crisis Communications Plan: A Case Study About the Jackson State University Shooting.”

On December 4, 2019, JSU went on lockdown after a shooter was reported on campus. Greenleaf’s presentation summarized how she led her team to carefully execute a thoughtful, practiced, crisis communications plan. Critical information was shared with the public in a measured and orderly way during the nearby university shooting.

“The boot camp was a great experience that allowed me to share crisis communication tips with my peers that I’ve gathered over the years while serving with numerous teams. Planning and execution are truly a team effort,” Greenleaf said.

Of the nine speakers, Greenleaf was the only individual from a Historically Black College and University. The other public relations and communications professionals represented Harvard Law School, Columbia Business School, Stanford University, Boston University, University of Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

“It was an honor to present as the only HBCU representative.”
