ADVISORY: Virtual National Watch Party for “Shaw Rising” Documentary

WHO:  Hosted by Shaw University and Shaw University National Alumni Association

WHAT:  Virtual national Watch Party for “Shaw Rising,” a documentary on the history of Shaw University, and the impact the University has had on the higher education and social justice landscapes

WHEN: Friday, April 17, 2020 at 9:00 p.m. EST

WHERE: Virtual event, participation enabled via link to be provided after 5:00 p.m. on Friday 4/17

WHY: The event date marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on the campus of Shaw University. The meeting between student leaders of the recent sit-ins and the civil rights elders of the day was facilitated by Shaw alumna and activist Ella Baker. Then-Shaw sophomore Dr. David C. Forbes, Sr. became a founding member of SNCC. The student-led advocacy group went on to become a major force in America’s civil rights movement.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the University canceled the week-long series of event celebrating SNCC’s 60th anniversary – The Spirit of SNCC: Beyond 2020 – and this virtual watch party will enable the Shaw University community and general public to connect and celebrate the impact of SNCC and the University where the group had its beginnings.
