Partnership Expands Opportunities for Students to Earn Four-Year Degrees

(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State University and the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will open new doors for BMCC graduates seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at Maryland’s first historically Black college or university (HBCU). Effective immediately, this partnership guarantees admission to eligible BMCC students, streamlining their transition to Bowie State while advancing educational equity.

Specifically, Bowie State University will provide guaranteed admission to all BMCC students who have successfully graduated from the institution with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree and hold standing as a junior. Students transferring will also be required to complete any additional Bowie State requirements prior to enrolling at Maryland’s oldest HBCU and with no more than 60 additional semester hours needed to earn a bachelor’s degree.

“Giving our students options to earn a four-year degree is critical,” said Anthony E. Munroe, President of the Borough of Manhattan Community College. “Bowie State University has established a reputation of providing students with a high-quality education. We believe this agreement will be the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial relationship for both institutions.”

BMCC, home to over 20,000 students, is nationally recognized for its exceptional impact on advancing minority student achievement. Ranked #5 among community colleges nationwide in granting associate degrees to minority students, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education, BMCC has established itself as a leader in providing opportunities for historically underrepresented groups to achieve academic success.

Offering two-year associate degrees in high-demand fields such as business administration, computer science, criminal justice, and education, the institution provides programs that closely align with Bowie State’s academic offerings. This alignment ensures a seamless transition for students as they advance toward earning their bachelor’s degrees.

“This transfer agreement between BMCC and BSU creates a unique pipeline that enables students from BMCC to tap into the plethora of resources afforded to Bowie State students,” said Bowie State President Aminta Breaux. “Many of our programs align with BMCC’s which will make the transition much easier for students.”

The partnership underscores the shared commitment of Bowie State and BMCC to expanding access to affordable, high-quality education for diverse communities.  By creating clear pathways to four-year degrees, the two institutions are empowering students to pursue their ambitions and unlock new opportunities for academic and professional success.
