CIAA Announces 2022 Softball Weekly Honors #4

FOOD LION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK#21 Samantha Cunningham, Virginia State (Sr, IF – Beach Park, IL) Cunningham was electric at the plate this past week, going 13-for-18 during the CIAA Softball Round-Up to finish with a .722 batting average and a .750 on-base percentage. The senior from Beach Park, IL tallied a 1.167 slugging percentage after recording five doubles and a two-run home run along with seven singles. Cunningham also drove in nine runs and scored eight more while also recording two stolen bases as VSU finished 5-1 on the week to take an early lead in the CIAA Northern Division standings. |
FOOD LION PITCHER OF THE WEEK
#42 Bre’Zhay Chambers, Claflin
(Sr, P – Rock Hill, SC)
Chambers finished with a perfect 3-0 record on the week while also registering a save. The Rock Hill, SC native pitched 22.1 innings over four games, registering 34 strikeouts and just two walks while also giving up just two extra base hits and one earned run (two total). Chambers finished the week with a 0.32 earned run average, helping Claflin finish with an unbeaten 6-0 record at the CIAA Softball Round-up.
FOOD LION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK #12 Marion Goins, Claflin (Sr, C – Ramseur, NC) Goins finished the week with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 58 putouts and eight assists. The senior catcher also caught three runners stealing during the CIAA Softball Round-Up. Offensively, Goins also registered six hits, including a home run and a double with four RBI, to help the Panthers finish with a 6-0 record on the week. |
FOOD LION ROOKIE OF THE WEEK#1 Alaijah Pratt, Virginia State (Fr, UT – Lusby, MD) Pratt recorded 14 hits on 25 at-bats over six games, including a double and three triples, to finish with a .560 batting average and a .840 slugging percentage on the week. The Lusby, MD had a .577 on-base percentage and scored 10 runs while recording nine RBI and going three-for-three on stolen bases. Pratt also went 2-0 on the mound, pitching over 16 innings with 14 strikeouts and just two walks. Defensively, Pratt also recorded three putouts and eight assists, finishing with a .916 fielding percentage, to help VSU finish with a 5-1 record on the week. |
