CIAA Announces Men’s & Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors #13

#12 Cartier Jernigan, Johnson C. Smith
(Jr., 6-0 Guard – Cleveland, OH)
Cartier Jernigan led the Golden Bulls to upset victories over Virginia Union and Fayetteville State, while averaging 22 points, 4.5 rebounds, and four assists last week. For the week, Jernigan shot 50 percent from the field (12-of-24) and 60 percent from three (9-of-15). In the 78-71 win against the Panthers, the junior scored 20 points, tied for the game-high. The Cleveland, OH native added five rebounds, four steals, and three assists in that game. In the 71-63 victory versus the Broncos, the six-foot guard finished with a game-high 24 points and five assists, plus four boards. To start the second half at home against Fayetteville State, Jernigan scored or assisted on the Golden Bulls’ first 24 points of the period to turn a 28-25 deficit into a 49-35 lead.

#22 Jaylon Gibson, Winston-Salem State
(Jr., 6-10 Center – Zebulon, NC)
Jaylon Gibson was key in the Rams’ 72-70 overtime win over St. Augustine’s last week. The junior finished with team-high totals of 17 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. The Zebulon, NC native scored the first five points in overtime for Winston-Salem State. Tied at 68 with 1:13 remaining in the game, the six-foot-ten center registered a block on a Falcons’ layup attempt and collected the defensive rebound. The Rams used that offensive possession for the go-ahead basket leading to the win.

#5 Ezekiel Cannedy, Johnson C. Smith
(Fr., 6-2 Guard – Kings Mountain, NC)
Ezekiel Cannedy averaged 11.5 points while shooting 43 percent from the field (6-of-14) and 56 percent from three (5-of-9) in wins over Virginia Union and Fayetteville State last week. Against the Panthers, the freshman scored 13 points and added four boards and an assist. Versus the Broncos, the Kings Mountain, NC native tallied 10 points, two steals, and two assists.

#22 Lauren Banks, Saint Augustine’s
(So., Guard – Clinton, MD)
Lauren Banks averaged 26 points last week, leading the Falcons to conference wins over Shaw and Winston-Salem State. In the 91-80 win against the Rams, the sophomore scored a career-high 33 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field and 6-of-11 from deep. The Clinton, MD native totaled 19 points, three assists, and three rebounds in the 74-34 win over the Bears. She shot 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-11 from deep in that game.

#15 Raquel Cassidy, Saint Augustine’s
(Sr., Forward – Gainesville, FL)
Raquel Cassidy aided the Falcons to wins over Shaw and Winston-Salem State last week by averaging 16.5 rebounds, 8 points, and 1.5 blocks. The senior set a career-high with 15 boards (10 defensive) against the Bears and then set a new career mark with 18 rebounds (13 defensive) three days later in the win over the Rams. In the 74-34 win over Shaw, the Gainesville, FL native scored 10 points to earn her third double-double of the season. In the 91-80 victory over Winston-Salem State, Cassidy logged two blocks with six points, in addition to the 18 boards.

#25 Bruni Martinez, Virginia Union
(Fr., 6-0 Forward – Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic)
In last week’s 93-90 win over non-conference opponent Washington Adventist, Bruni Martinez set career-highs of 20 rebounds and 16 blocks, while playing 45 minutes in the double-overtime contest. The freshman from Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic also recorded three blocks, a steal, and an assist while making 6-of-10 field goals in the game.
