9115FOOD LION MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK


#22 Terrence Hunter-Whitfield, Virginia State
(Jr, 6-5 Forward – Chesterfield, VA)


Hunter-Whitfield averaged a double double with 29.5 points and 10 rebounds per contest over two games, including a 31-point, 11-rebound performance against Winston-Salem State. The junior forward also posted 28 points and nine rebounds in the Trojans win over Livingstone. For the week, Hunter-Whitfield also shot 53 percent from the field, 62 percent from three, and 74 percent from the foul line as VSU finished with a 1-1 record.

FOOD LION MEN’S DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK


#12 Xavier Fennell, Winston-Salem State
(So, 6-4 Guard – Raleigh, NC) 


Fennell totaled 17 rebounds, including 10 defensive boards, along with four blocks and two steals over two games. Offensively, the Raleigh, NC native contributed 13.5 points per game, including a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds against Virginia State. Fennell and the Rams finished 2-0 for the week with conference wins over VSU and Shaw.

#0 Samage Teel, Winston-Salem State
(Fr, 6-2 Guard – Greenville, NC)


Teel delivered off the bench as the sixth man averaging 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, three assists, and two steals over two games. The freshman from Greenville, NC had his best game of the week against Virginia State with a game-high 23 points, five assists, and four steals. Teel also shot 48 percent from the field, including 40 from behind the arc, and 88 percent from the free throw line as WSSU finished 2-0 for the week with wins over the Trojans and Shaw.

#0 Amaya Tucker, Winston-Salem State
(So, 5-6 Guard – Winston-Salem, NC)


Tucker averaged 16.5 points and six rebounds per game over two contests to earn her second player of the week honor this season. The sophomore guard also averaged 5.5 assists (11 total) and 2.5 steals per game as the Rams finished with conference wins over Shaw and Virginia State. Tucker’s best performance of the week came against VSU with 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. She is currently the CIAA’s second leading scorer at 16.4 points per game.

FOOD LION WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK


#23 Natalia Leaks, Virginia State
(Sr, 5-9 Forward – Miramar, FL)


Leaks grabbed 15 rebounds, including 12 defensive rebounds, and tallied four steals in Virginia State’s two games against Winston-Salem State and Livingstone. The senior from Miramar, FL also averaged 13.5 points on offense that included a double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds double double against the Blue Bears.

FOOD LION WOMEN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK


#12 Tyliah Burns, Winston-Salem State
(Fr, 5-8 Guard – North Augusta, SC)


Burns averaged 14 points, three rebounds, and three assists over two games. Her best performance came in WSSU’s 96-44 win over Shaw with a game-high 20 points, four rebounds, and three assists. The 5-8 guard from North Augusta, SC shot 61 from the field (11 for 18), including 60 percent from three , for the week.
