CIAA FARA To Host Virtual Mental Health Symposium on July 15 & 16

CHARLOTTE – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the nation’s oldest historically black conference, has teamed up with the CIAA Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA) to host a virtual mental health symposium. Created to heighten awareness among its membership and align with the conference’s strategic plan, the symposium will bring together student-athletes and coaches to learn about mental health and explore how it’s impacted by events such as COVID-19 and the unrest surrounding the fight for justice.

The CIAA Virtual Mental Health Symposium, a two-session webinar designed for CIAA student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, will take place on Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16. The symposium will be hosted by Dr. T.M. Robinson-Mosley, creator of The Sports Mental Health Wellness Playbook, and Dr. Lakeitha Poole. Each session will begin at 3 p.m. EST.

“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and fight for equality, it is imperative that we to assist our student-athletes to recognize and understand the impact of the crisis on their mental health. This constructive discussion will ultimately provide coaches and student-athletes with useful tools and resources designed to support them as they transition back to our institutions”, said Dr. Charles Pinckney, CIAA FARA President.

During both sessions, engaging discussions facilitated by Dr. Robinson-Mosley and Dr. Poole will center around: prevention mechanisms, positive coping strategies, healing practices, anxiety, depression, and how mental health impacts substance abuse, eating habits. Attendees will be provided with an opportunity to participate in an interactive Q & A session following the presentation.

One of the pillars of the new CIAA strategic plan is Champions of Character, with a goal to promote and support the development of student-athletes. The CIAA Virtual Mental Wellness Symposium is indicative of the type of programming that the conference and its membership will look to continue taking part in for the foreseeable future.

Last minute registration is still open HERE for students that would like to participate in the two-day event. For the latest information on the CIAA, visit theciaa.com. You can also like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram
