HBCU Students Gain Hands-On Preservation Training at Tuskegee University
WHAT: Tuskegee University students are participating in a program this summer that aims to bring young African American students working toward architecture degrees into historic preservation and related career paths.
“Touching History: Preservation in Practice” was developed to raise awareness about the importance of historic preservation and conservation while, at the same time, engaging a new generation of preservation professionals in completing urgent preservation work at America’s HBCU campuses.
Six Tuskegee University architecture students are working with the National Trust’s HOPE (Hands-On Preservation Experience) Crew through August 22 to perform window restoration work on the Willcox E building. The media is invited to attend a special open house to meet project leaders and learn about the essential maintenance and preservation work now underway. HOPE Crew participants, as well as spokespeople from the National Trust, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the National Park Service, and Tuskegee University will be on hand to speak with the media.
Touching History: Preservation in Practice is a joint effort of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the National Park Service’s Western Center for Historic Preservation, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s HOPE Crew.
