Jackson State University Appoints KB Turner As New Dean Of The College Of Liberal Arts

(JACKSON, Miss.) — Jackson State University announces the appointment of Dr. KB Turner as dean of the College of Liberal Arts, effective August 11.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Turner to the Jackson State University family,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Alisa L. Mobley, Ph.D. “His academic experience, external collaborations, and vision will augment the College of Liberal Arts and the university’s strategic plan, and the university’s mission statement. I am confident that he will move the college forward in new and exciting ways.”
Turner most recently served as the chair of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Memphis, becoming the founding director for the Center for Community Criminology Research on the Lambuth Campus in Jackson, Tennessee.  Under his leadership, he rebuilt the department from three to 13 dynamic tenure and non-track faculty members.
Also under his leadership, the department has achieved national recognition for its online programs and received the highest ratings possible upon completion of the five-year external review. The University of Memphis online criminal justice program is ranked number one in Tennessee.

Previously, Turner held teaching posts in Alabama and Nebraska, where he received the Recognition Award for Contributions to Students. He is a recipient of The University of Memphis College of Arts and Sciences award for Excellence in Teaching. He also is a recipient of the Maxine Smith Fellow (2012) and was a member of Leadership Memphis (2015).
Additionally, Turner is a current commissioned law-enforcement officer and trainer in a law enforcement and corrections career that commenced over three decades ago in Omaha, Nebraska. Before his full-time career in academia, Turner was a police officer with the Omaha and Boys Town Police Departments and a deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department in Nebraska.
He has served with the Desoto County, Mississippi, Sheriff’s Department and Tunica County, Mississippi, Sheriff’s Department as a trainer. He said he is proud to have trained law enforcement officers from more than 25 states and countries in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). He also holds a full-time law enforcement officer certification, instructor certificate, firearms instructor, O.C. Spray and PPCT instructor certificates from Mississippi.
Turner graduated from Jackson State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He received his master’s degree in criminal justice with a concentration in public administration from The University of Nebraska at Omaha and earned his Ph.D. in political science from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Turner is a life member of the Jackson State University National Alumni Association and a financial member of the Memphis alumni chapter. He has written and published several articles and book chapters on policing, and various criminal justice issues. He has taught most of the courses in the criminal justice curriculum. His research interests are varied, including a focus on judicial decision making, race, ethnicity and gender issues and police administration concerns. He is also a former consultant for the University of the Virgin Islands, where he redesigned the Criminal Justice Program for the AA, BA and BS degrees.
