Once Contemplating Withdrawal From College, Jackson State University Campus Queen Perseveres, Lands Job At Amazon

(JACKSON, Miss.) — Gorgeous. Smart. Stylish. Popular. These are all characteristics seemingly associated with being Miss Jackson State University. Daisia Davis appears to have an abundance of these qualities, but her college journey has been far from a crystal stair. “During my sophomore year, I was struggling financially to stay enrolled, so I walked to the Financial Aid Office to solicit help,” Davis explained. “Initially, I was told there was nothing else that could be done for me to stay in school without paying my balance.” One of the counselors administered Davis’ withdrawal forms and advised her to complete them promptly.“I remember contemplating the entire day,” she said. “I couldn’t believe this was my reality.” Before the day ended, Davis went back to the Financial Aid Office. This time, she was sent to talk with a different counselor, Yvette Devine, who sadly passed away last year. “The late Miss Devine talked with me after hearing my pleas for help. She applied GAP Student Emergency Funds to my account,” Davis said. The GAP Emergency Fund helps students who face a financial gap after all financial aid and scholarship awards have been applied toward their tuition. The program is also designed to provide financial support to students for emergency expenses, such as unexpected illness, accidents and economic hardships. “For me, that moment was the highlight of my entire collegiate experience because she took the initiative to make sure I was able to stay at Jackson State. She is the reason I am able to talk about my journey at JSU — I am beyond grateful for her,” she said. From there, the Belleville, Illinois, native has served on the executive board for several student organizations, initiated as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and earned the title of Miss Jackson State University. During Davis’ third year of college, the dean of the College of Business, Dr. Fidelis Ikem, hand-picked her and a few other students to attend Amazon’s “Beyond the Yard” conference in Nashville, Tennessee. “Daisia is an incredibly bright, poised and articulate young lady,” Ikem said. “We want our students to excel academically and ultimately earn these types of opportunities at major corporations. Moving forward, we can use her story as a way to recruit incoming students. I am beyond proud and overwhelmingly happy for her.” The three-day conference, “Beyond the Yard: Your Path, Your Future,” took place in February 2020 as part of Amazon’s Black History Month initiative. The conference assembled 225 students from 42 HBCUs to learn, connect and think big about their future paths. It was Amazon’s first conference for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. During the event, the business marketing major met an Amazon recruiter for student programs. After an in-depth discussion, she was interviewed and selected for an account representative internship at Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington. Due to COVID-19, she could not travel to Seattle for the summer, but she was allowed to complete her internship remotely. After finishing her internship at Amazon, Davis was offered a full-time, six-figure opportunity as an account representative in the Amazon Pay Department. Davis said she is confident in her choice to move more than 2,000 miles from home mainly due to her life’s motto: “Start being comfortable, being uncomfortable.” She admits that once she started living by this mantra, she reached greater heights, ultimately forcing her to grow outside of her element. With a subtle smile, Davis said, “I am excited to work at Amazon, and I am anticipating moving across the country to Seattle. This will be a very different experience for me, but I am ready.” Davis says her journey at JSU has been amazing, and she is proud of her overall growth. “I feel like Jackson State has definitely challenged my mind and changed my life for the better,” she said. “I’ve always spoken success over my life, but I never knew how great God would order my steps, and it all started with placing me here at JSU.”
