Hampton University Student, Tyla Barnes, Receives $15,000 Journalism Scholarship through the Chevrolet Discover the Unexpected Program

HAMPTON, Va. (June 26, 2019) – Hampton University journalism student and rising senior Tyla Barnes, has won a $15,000 scholarship through Chevrolet’s 2019 Discover the Unexpected (DTU) Program. DTU is a journalism fellowship for HBCUs, where six fellows receive $10,000 in scholarship money, plus $5,000 for an incredible eight-week road trip in the all-new 2019 Chevy Blazer to intern at one of two National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) newspapers. Throughout their travels, the fellows will discover and share positive, inspirational and relevant stories from African American communities.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Ms. Barnes. We know that she will use the skills she has learned from our highly regarded journalism program, and will represent Hampton University well. This experience will allow Ms. Barnes to use her unique voice to inspire and motivate others,” said Dr. William R. Harvey, President of Hampton University.

Now in its fourth year, DTU is a partnership between Chevrolet and NNPA. Chevrolet has awarded more than $330,000 in scholarships and stipends since the program’s inception in 2015. The program started with a select number of schools, and based on the overwhelming response, the online submission process was opened to all HBCU students in their sophomore through senior years with an interest in journalism, communications, mass media or visual arts.

“Our partnership with the NNPA continues to provide a unique platform to connect with young and remarkable storytellers,” said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “From the inaugural launch at Howard University to the inclusion of all the HBCUs, it is Chevrolet’s pleasure to partner with members of the African American community, ensuring a legacy is established for generations to come. We’re thrilled to meet this year’s group of fellows and immerse them in all things Chevrolet.”

Barnes will complete her fellowship at both Atlanta Voice in Atlanta, Ga., and Houston Forward Times in Houston, TX from June 6 until August 1. To receive the fellowship, Barnes had to fill out an online application, resume with GPA, writing sample, and a video describing why she should be chosen for the fellowship. “I knew about the fellowship last year, but had missed the deadline, so this year I was keeping my eye out for information. I received an email from Scripps Howard about an extension for the deadline so I quickly put my application together and by the grace of God, got it in by the deadline,” Barnes said.

A short couple of weeks after the deadline, Barnes received the great news that she had been accepted into the program. Now, she is interning at Atlanta Voice with the two other students on her team, and traveling in the brand new Chevy Blazer, equipped with new safety features and space large enough to hold every journalist’s needed equipment.

Disc jockey and music producer DJ Envy, a co-host of the syndicated radio show, “The Breakfast Club,” will be the program’s national spokesperson. Musician and author Fonzworth Bentley will serve as the fellows’ Road Trip Advisor. Both are HBCU alums — DJ Envy graduated from Hampton University and Bentley is a Morehouse College graduate.

Barnes is excited about the opportunity and is looking forward to what she will be learning. “I’m hoping to gain skills for producing and storytelling, as well as experience with networking. I’m really looking forward to being able to tell more undiscovered stories in the black community,” Barnes said.
