09/24/2019

HAMPTON, Va. (September 24, 2019) — Hampton University will host a Welcome Reception for the newly arrived Bahamian students displaced from the University of the Bahamas – North campus by Hurricane Dorian this afternoon in the Student Center Ballroom at 4:15 p.m.

During this event, Bahamian students will have a chance to meet members of Hampton University’s Administration, Faculty, Staff and members of the student body. Dr. William R. Harvey, Hampton University President, will deliver the official welcome to the Bahamian students and other administrators will introduce themselves and explain the services offered by their respective divisions.

Hampton University is prepared to receive 46 students from the University of the Bahamas-North campus. Those students worked with the Hampton University Office of Admissions and the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas over the last few days to obtain expedited student visas to allow them entry into the country.

“This outpouring of humanitarian support has exceeded all expectations,” said Dr. William R. Harvey. “The heartwarming response we have received from all of the country to our gesture for these students has restored my faith in mankind.”

Several groups came together to help support Dr. William R. Harvey’s humanitarian offer to the University of the Bahamas – North campus students. Hampton University is covering their tuition, room, board and fees. One of Hampton’s Board members, Zachary Scott pledged $100,000 to this effort. The list of growing monetary donations to help offset the international travel costs for these students now stands at approximately $150,000.  Bahamasair provided the students free transportation from Freeport, Grand Bahama, where the University of the Bahamas – North campus is located to Nassau, New Providence. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, in suburban Atlanta, Ga., in partnership with JetBlue Airways, Head and Heart Philanthropy and Jacmel Partners joined together to provide transportation for the Bahamian students from Nassau, New Providence to Virginia on Monday and Tuesday.

The Hampton University Office of the Registrar has received the fall schedules of the Bahamian students and has placed them in compatible courses here at Hampton University based on cross matching courses between the University of the Bahamas and Hampton University course catalogs.

Dr. Harvey and Dr. Rodney Smith, the President of the University of the Bahamas, the former Administrative Vice President and Chief Planning Officer at Hampton University, agreed to this arrangement after Hurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas with high winds and rain for more than two days, causing extensive damage and several deaths.
Both university presidents have enjoyed a long and successful relationship; and, Hampton has been the educational choice for many Bahamian students.

Anyone interested in supporting these students is asked to please contact the Hampton University Office of Development at 757-727-5002.
