Voorhees alumnus goes from councilman to mayor

Denmark, S.C.– Voorhees College alumnus John Dunmyer, III was recently named mayor of Hollywood, S.C. after winning more than half of the votes.

Dunmyer served as a councilman for Hollywood from 1997-2019, and is also a veteran of the United States Airborne where he served 20 years.

His focus as mayor will be to share a vision with town and council. Listening to the concerns of the citizens and implementing an action plan to address the issues is how he plans to go forward.

“I am honored and proud the people of Hollywood trust me to be their mayor,” Dunmyer said. “I have served my country for 20 years and now I want to continue serving Hollywood as I lead them further into the 21st century.”

Dunmyer earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Voorhees college and a master’s degree in administration from Michigan University. He is also a graduate of the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

A member of the Voorhees College Charleston Alumni Chapter, Dunmyer serves as parliamentarian and scholarship chair and is also past president. He is a life and provincial member of the Charleston Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and is liaison for the southeastern province for Military and Veterans Affairs Commission (MVAC).

Dunmyer and his wife, Linda, have three daughters: Jacquetta (Calvin), JaNel, and Joni (Cedric). In addition, they have three grandchildren: Addison, Ryan, and Cohen.
