Tournament Ends With Morgan Women Defeating Delaware State

NORFOLK, Va., March 12, 2020–A 3-point play from Chelsea Mitchell with 42 seconds left proved to be the different Thursday as Morgan State held on for a 64-63 quarterfinal win over Delaware State in the 2020 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament at the Scope Arena.

The win gave the third-seeded Lady Bears a slot in the semifinal round, but the tournament was suspended after the game because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus (read more here).

Mitchell recorded her 14th double-double of the season, notching 18 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Dahnye Redd led the way with 24 points.

After a tightly-contested first half, the two teams went into the locker room deadlocked at 28 — in what was the sixth tie of the opening 20 minutes. After 30 minutes, the sixth-seeded Hornets (12-17) had taken a 47-44 lead, and with 8:40 to go, that lead grew to 51-46.

But Morgan State (17-13) fought back, and wth 51 seconds left, the score was tied 61-61 — the 17th tie of the game that set up the final moments. Mitchell’s three the old-fashioned way proved to be the difference, despite Tierra Floyd’s layup with 26 seconds remaining.

Floyd led four Hornets in double figures with 13 points and nine boards.
