Two Hampton University Students Receive Inaugural GN Hearing Scholarship

Hampton University students, Darchayla Lewis and Shamine Alves, have been named the first recipients of GN Hearing’s, the global leader in hearing aid innovation, new scholarship.  Both are seniors pursuing degrees in the Communicative Sciences and Disorders Department. GN Hearing will provide each student with $10,000 ($5,000 per semester) for the 2021/2022 academic year.

“Congratulations to Ms. Darchayla Lewis and Ms. Shamine Alves for receiving this new scholarship offered by GN Hearing. They are great examples of the high-caliber students that Hampton University prepares to go out and make a difference in the world by serving others. I am thankful that GN Hearing is taking an active role in increasing the number of Black audiologists within the field by creating and implementing this new scholarship,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.

The GN Hearing Scholarship was established in 2021 as the first community educational initiative championed by Black@GN.  The goal is to help increase the number of Black audiologists within the field by supporting motivated, leadership-minded college students who are committed to honoring the legacy of African American and Black achievement within their schools and communities.

“We are so honored to be able to support two amazing students who understand the importance of hearing and want to make a difference in audiology,” says Anthony Stephenson, ReSound regional sales director and communications leader for Black@GN, one of GN’s employee resource groups.  “It’s also an honor to partner with Hampton University, one of the leading historically black universities in the world. Through the talents and efforts of Shamine and Darchayla, we will help more people with hearing loss benefit from hearing care in all communities that need it.”

GN funded the scholarship by donating $5 for every ReSound ONEBeltone Imagine and Audigy AGX hearing aid sold this past February, Black History Month.

In addition to the scholarship, GN and ReSound donated ReSound ONE hearing aids, M&RIE receivers, Noahlink Wireless, and additional supplies and materials to ensure students are learning with the most recent state-of-the art technology.
