Denmark, S.C. – Voorhees College will host its annual Absalom Jones Feast Day celebration, virtually, on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. It may be viewed on the Voorhees College YouTube Channel  or Facebook Page
Jones was the first ordained African-American priest in the Episcopal Church in the United States. He became a religious icon of the late 1700s and early 1800s and helped to abolish slavery in America. His accomplishments are celebrated at Voorhees as part of Black History Month. Currently, Voorhees is one of two historically black colleges and universities affiliated with the Episcopal Church. The other institution is Saint Augustine’s University.
The virtual ceremony will include a ten-minute video on the life and time of Jones with introductory and concluding remarks by Voorhees College President Ronnie Hopkins.
