Voorhees prepares for 123rd Opening Convocation
Denmark, S.C.- Voorhees College will hold its 123rd fall Opening Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center to formally celebrate the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year.
This year’s keynote speaker will be 24th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Dr. Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre. She served from 2008-2013 leading the sorority through its centennial celebrations giving worldwide attention to the sorority and its work globally.
In June of 2013, Delta named an elementary school in Cherette, Haiti in her honor. In 2011, President Barack Obama tapped her to serve as his appointee on the Board of Trustees of the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation.
Her professional experience also includes her service as the executive director of Tech-Prep Summer Program at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, La. She has also worked as the assistant coordinator of field experiences and supervisor for early childhood student teachers at the University of New Orleans.
A lifelong native of New Orleans, La., she earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Dillard University and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction/educational administration from the University of New Orleans. Additionally, she is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree in religious education from the Louisiana Christian Bible College; and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from Dillard University.
She is an active, life-long member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church in New Orleans. Her present and past professional and community affiliations include: Board of Commissioners of the Jefferson Federation of Teachers Health & Wellness Fund; National Board of the NAACP; National Board of the National Council of Negro Women; Delta Foundation, Board member of the Jefferson Community Health Centers, Board Member, Greg Monroe (#55 Philadelphia 76ers) Foundation. She is also a member of The Links, Inc.
Butler-McIntyre currently resides in New Orleans and is married to Ronney McIntyre, owner/operator of McIntyre Masonry, and they have four children and three grandchildren.
