As students and alumni converge on the Yard to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Howard University’s homecoming, Vice President Kamala Harris shared a greeting today with some of her own memories at The Mecca, emphasizing the profound role her HBCU has had on her journey and values.
“I have so many fond memories as a student at ‘The Mecca,’ and I recognize that my time at Howard shaped me into the person I am today,” Harris wrote. “At Howard, we learn that we have the capacity to be great and also that we have the responsibility to work hard to live up to that potential each day.”
The centennial occurs in conjunction with this historic election cycle and another milestone on the horizon as the Howard alumna sets her sights on becoming the first woman to serve as president of the United States with running mate Tim Walz at her side.
The Democratic nominee also used a portion of her Howard remarks to address the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to education and $17 billion investment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Harris also pointed out the administration’s increase in the size of Pell Grants and student loan forgiveness.
“We have taken historic actions to ensure all students have the resources they need to thrive,” she said. “We know more needs to be done, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside you as we build a brighter future for all.”
The message from the vice president serves as an example of the legacy of Howard University. This is a community of alumni and students who are proud to support their fellow Bison in all endeavors, big or small, with one now seeking the highest office in the land in November.
During this week’s homecoming activities, it was not unusual to see someone showcasing Harris-Walz something in support of the Howard alumna.
This display of unwavering support underscores the pride and hope that Harris represents to the Bison community. And as her fellow alumni lift the vice president, she continually reminds them of her gratitude.
“I am proud to be an alumna of Howard University, and I send you all my best wishes for a wonderful homecoming celebration.”
