Bennett College Named 2023 HBCU Institutional Leader by Fulbright Program

By: Bennett College

Bennett College is pleased to announce it has been named a Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader for 2023, a designation the College has received for the fourth consecutive year!

Bennett College is one of only 19 HBCUs honored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for demonstrating noteworthy engagement with the Fulbright Program. Bennett’s designation signifies the College’s deep commitment to international exchange and to building lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

The State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs established the Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader designation in 2019 to recognize the strong partnerships between the Fulbright Program and selected HBCUs, and to encourage all HBCUs to increase engagement with Fulbright.

As part of its commitment to global opportunities for cultural engagement, Bennett College has hosted international Fulbright students for multiple years.

“At Bennett, we welcome the world to our campus. We also encourage our students to have an international experience before graduating, so we are thrilled to be recognized as a 2023 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader,” said Bennett College President Suzanne Walsh. She adds, “This is our fourth year receiving this prestigious designation. It is a testament to our commitment to supporting an environment of cultural exploration for our students and our faculty.”

Anne Hayes, Executive Director of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies at Bennett College, shared this: “We are thrilled to be named a 2023 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader. With two Fulbright FLTAs annually, we infuse global perspectives into our classes and offer enriching cultural programs for our entire community. The transformative impact of our FLTAs is evident as they provide instruction in Arabic, Yoruba, Swahili, and other languages. Many of our FLTAs are taking classes and former FLTAs of the program are pursuing PhD programs worldwide, reinforcing their dedication to global engagement.”

The Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders designations were announced publicly during the week of Sept. 18, in conjunction with the White House Initiative on HBCUs National HBCU Week Conference in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to our Fulbrighters, faculty, and staff for their engagement with The Fulbright Program!
