BSU: Hosts Social Justice Alliance Symposium

National Leaders Unite to Mobilize for Justice and Democracy

(BOWIE, Md.)—Bowie State University, in partnership with the University of Maryland and the 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III Foundation, hosted the seventh annual BSU-UMD Social Justice Alliance (SJA) Symposium with the theme “Rise Up: Mobilizing for Justice and Democracy.” The event brought together students, educators and national changemakers to address civic engagement and the ongoing fight to protect democracy in today’s society.

“We cannot allow the memory of Richard to fade,” said Dawn Collins, co-founder of the 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III Foundation. “When hate goes unchallenged, it threatens not only individual lives but the soul of our communities. This symposium is a space to remember, to rise, and to act — ensuring that his legacy drives us toward justice and collective change.”

2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III was stabbed to death on the campus of the University of Maryland in May 2017 a few days before graduating as he waited for an Uber with friends.

Formed in memory of 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III, the Social Justice Alliance continues to amplify youth-led activism, advocate for policy reform, and foster collaboration between institutions and communities. Now in its seventh year, the symposium featured engaging breakout sessions on voting access, educational equity, and coalition-building across campuses—equipping students with tools to become informed and active citizens.

Moderated by MSNBC political commentator Symone Sanders, the event featured a powerhouse lineup of panelists including former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre; U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey; Maryland State Sen. Alonzo Washington; Nicole Austin-Hillery, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation; and political content creator Elizabeth Booker Houston.

Each speaker offered unique perspectives on justice, equity, and civic responsibility in modern America. The symposium also included a moving musical performance by singer-songwriter Leon Timbo, who joined the BSU Gospel Choir to deliver powerful songs rooted in resilience, unity, and hope.
