Lonnie Johnson honored at 42nd Annual CEO Appreciation Luncheon

The Atlanta Business League (ABL) held their 42nd Annual CEO Appreciation Luncheon, honoring leaders of businesses demonstrating great qualities of leadership and innovative discoveries in their fields. Among those honored was Tuskegee graduate Dr. Lonnie Johnson.

Johnson received the TrailBlazer Award from the ABL for his diligent work in the field of engineering as well as his groundbreaking innovation on family fun.

Johnson attended Tuskegee University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Johnson began his career in the U.S Air Force, where he worked on the stealth bomber program, until he left for NASA in 1979. While he was at NASA, he developed the power source for the Galileo mission to Jupiter and served as an engineer on the Spacecraft for the Saturn orbit probe missions. In 1991, Johnson founded his own company, Johnson Research and Development Company Inc., where he is currently the president. He is also currently working with other scientists to develop a method to turn heat into electricity.

Johnson is the inventor of the worldwide known Super Soaker water gun as well as the coveted Nerf Gun. As one would imagine, Dr. Johnson made a healthy amount of money from that ordeal, however what he did with those funds is unprecedented. He invested most of that money back into a laboratory in downtown Atlanta, where Johnson teaches inner city youth to build functioning robots.

JTEC Energy CEO Michael McQuary and parter of Dr. Johnson said, “Lonnie has dedicated half of his space to stem programs helping Atlanta school kids learn science and engineering. That is the most important part of Lonnie’s legacy, it’s the next generation of kids”

During the awards ceremony, Dr Johnson acknowledged the drive behind his accomplishments, “The super soaker spoiled me, it allowed me to take a toy gun and literally change the game with it, so now I feel like I have to do that with everything I do.”

Johnson holds over 250 patents, many of them are for the famous super soaker. He was awarded two medals from the U.S Air Force and received multiple awards from NASA for his work on the spacecraft. In 2008, he was awarded the Breakthrough Award from science magazine Popular Mechanics for his work related to JTEC.
