NEWARK, DE —Robert Smith scored 22 points, but the Delaware State men’s basketball team fell to the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens 93-80 on the road Tuesday in a competitive “Route 1” rivalry.
The Hornets (3-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Smith, who had 22 points. Martaz Robinson added 19 points and Kaseem Watson added six points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Muneer Newton pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Delaware State offense which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into eight second-chance points.
The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday’s game, forcing 16 Delaware turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Watson’s two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 42-27 heading into halftime.
Delaware kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 70-44 advantage before Delaware State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Robinson’s jumper, to shrink the deficit to 70-53 with 8:53 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept their comeback going, but Delaware managed to hold on for the 93-80 win.
