ShawU: Stephen N. James remembered as a dedicated officer, coach

RALEIGH — The Shaw University family is mourning the passing of alumnus Stephen N. James ’01, who transitioned Feb. 4, 2024.
Alumnus James is being remembered for his dedication as a corporal with the Shaw University Campus Police and Security Department. He also was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran.
While a student at Shaw University, Cpl. James joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He made the dean’s list during the 1997-98 school year and for several years was co-captain of Shaw University’s cross-country and track-and-field teams. His on-campus accolades included:
- CIAA Academic Achievement Award, 1997-98
- Dean’s list, 1997-98
- CIAA Most Valuable Runner, 1998-2000
- CIAA Most Outstanding Outdoor Track Performer, 1998-2000
- CIAA All-Conference Champion (4×400-meter relay)
Cpl. James would later volunteer as an assistant coach for the Shaw University women’s cross-country team.
A celebration of life service for Cpl. James is 1 p.m. Feb. 10, 2024, at The Fountain of Raleigh Fellowship Church.
