Winning the 2022 Celebration Bowl, North Carolina Central defeated previously unbeaten Jackson State in front of over 49,000 plus people 41-34 in overtime. Jackson State was defeated in the HBCU national title for the second year in a row. North Carolina Central captured its first Celebration Bowl with this victory.

In theirst Celebration Bowl overtime in history, NCCU reigned victorious.  Davius Richard, the quarterback for North Carolina Central, and MEAC Offensive Player of the year, scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak after receiving the opening kickoff. On its drive, JSU appeared to have the answer when faced with a third-and-goal situation on the one-yard line until tight end Hayden Hagler fumbled the ball that would have tied the game. Jackson State missed a third-down opportunity, so the Eagles put pressure on Shedeur Sanders to make an incomplete pass that would ultimately secure the victory. Sanders’ follow-up ball to the end zone fell incomplete on a 4th and goal situation, with the game once more in the balance.

Stanley Williams of Maryland said, “Oh, what a game! It will be talked about for ages.” Deion Sanders, who has already relocated to Boulder, Colorado, and who will be the head coach of Colorado, coached his final game for JSU. In the yearly matchup between the two HBCU leagues, the MEAC champion has now defeated the SWAC champion five times in a row..
